A Message to Students as the spring semester comes to an end (Updated 5/1/2020)

We know these last two months have been challenging to say the least, the loss of community, your peers, faculty and staff, the things that make Tulane and New Orleans “the place to be.” Whether you’re on or off campus or back at home, things have changed, we now live in a new normal. Some of us handle change well and others may not. Know that if you need us, we are here. 

We realize that this is a critical time as you prepare for finals, or are writing papers, thesis and even your dissertation. We encourage you to be mindful of self-care, pacing yourself, getting enough sleep, exercise and nourishment to finish out the semester strong. We want you to know that the staff at the Center for Intercultural Life (Office of Multicultural Affairs and The Office for Gender & Sexual Diversity - formerly known as “The O”) along with the rest of the division of Student Affairs are rooting for you and wish you well.

For those of you who are graduating, we wish you much prosperity and success as you begin new chapters in your lives and for those who are returning, we look forward to working with you to provide programs, services and advocacy that will help you thrive. A message regarding COVID-19 updates from The Carolyn Barber Pierre Center for Intercultural Life (Updated 3/22/2020 6:00 p.m.)

The staff of the Carolyn Barber-Pierre Center for Intercultural Life (Office of Multicultural Affairs, Office for Gender and Sexual Diversity, and Religious Life at Tulane) is here to support you during this time. We want to reiterate the importance of continuing social distancing and other practices that prevent the spread of Coronavirus on campus and in our local community. Our job is to support you as you navigate the campus wide migration to online learning with a quick turnaround, and we are doing this in a variety of ways. Our Programming

Some of the changes you will see include new virtual office hours with each member of our staff. You can find these hours on our homepage and below. We planned to open the Rathskeller Lounge to on campus students, but it is not an ideal space for social distancing at this time. Starting on the week of March 30th CIL will be offering weekly themed programming to keep our communities connected, engaged, and supported. Please stay tuned for more information about these interactive programs! We will continue to offer our advocacy, resources, and support services for students who are underrepresented at Tulane whether you are still on campus, off campus but local, or have returned home. OMA and OGSD social media profiles will have updates on virtual programs like dance party breaks, self-care, Look for updates throughout the remainder of the semester for opportunities to connect no matter where you are. Academic Concerns

As a result of this transition you may experience barriers to your academic success while participating in online courses. Examples may include unreliable internet access or living in a different time zone. Please work with your faculty to eliminate or work around these challenges should they arise. If you have concerns about academic barriers to learning that cannot be solved by your faculty please be sure to complete a Remote Student Support Form. Please contact your academic advisor if you need additional support or resources related to your courses, schedule, etc.

Financial Concerns

The Department of Education is working to keep students in college during this time and financial aid offices played an instrumental role in continuing to support students during the switch to an online learning environment. Read more about how your financial aid could be impacted on the  StudentAid.Gov Website. You may have received emergency funding to support you during this time. Please keep in mind that this could have an impact on your financial aid package. Please contact your financial aid counselor if you have specific questions related to your financial aid package. Career Concerns

We know that many graduating students are in the process of launching their careers and searching for jobs. Please consider setting up a professional branding space by leveraging the power of your social media presence (Linkedin, FB, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) to provide employers a holistic opportunity to see you are ready to enter the workforce. In a time of great uncertainty, you want to stand out as someone who is prepared to thrive in this new reality. You may also want to connect with Tulane Alumni in your city. Opportunity may come as a result of you identifying new ways to thrive in the world during and after this major global event. Think about how your academic, social, and co-curricular experiences at Tulane can uniquely position you to support various organizations that are looking for innovation and flexibility in their next hire. This may be an ideal time to consider internships that will allow you to demonstrate your skills virtually until a position becomes available. Think outside the box and keep your list of recommenders close and continue to maintain good relationships with current supervisors, faculty, staff, and mentors during this time. Please contact career services and/or success coach to work on your resumes, cover letters, and virtual interview skills.

We are working closely with our campus partners in the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), The Dean of Students and CMVSS, The Center for Academic Equity (CAE), Newcomb Institute (NI), The Center for Public Service (CPS) and Campus Life (LBC, SOC, NSLP) to make sure all Tulane Students transition smoothly to an online learning community. In light of the recent new from President Fitts regarding COVID-19 and the steps Tulane will be taking we wanted to reach out directly to the community we serve. (Updated 3/14/2020 5:00 p.m.)

Between March 14 and March 22 all uptown, on-campus students should prepare to move out of their residence halls for the remainder of the semester.

  • A number of students may have an exceptional need to remain on campus. Some, such as international students, may have difficulty returning home; others, such as in-season athletes, have activities that require them to be present on campus. Students who are seeking an exception to moving off campus should submit an online application. We know that some students may need to stay on campus, in New Orleans, and/or need financial assistance in getting home. Therefore please utilize this online application:

Student Organizations Updates

  • In response to the announcement from President Fitts and the recommendation to practice social distancing, ALL Recognized Student Organization activities, meetings, events, and travel are canceled immediately.  Please share this update with your organization members, particularly any event organizers so they are aware as soon as possible.  As this is a developing situation, we will be following up in the coming days with details and contacts related to questions such as funding, contracts, etc.  We recognize this is a disruption to your organization’s plans for the semester and we appreciate your assistance with keeping all members of the Tulane and New Orleans communities as safe as possible.
