Each spring the Office of Multicultural Affairs seeks graduate assistants to support various programs and services provided by the department for the academic year. Real Experience Working with Diverse Populations

Serving as a graduate assistant in The "O" means learning how to authentically engage with members of the campus community as well as the vendors, non-profit organizations, and other partners of campus. This role will include leading students on cultural trips both locally and around the nation throughout the academic year and spending time exploring the diverse world we live in. Other opportunities to practice inclusive leadership in this role include;

  • Designing and facilitating programs for the Kaleidoscope Multicultural Residential Learning Community in Paterson Hall
  • Coordinating a weekly nutrition program that provides a taste of the New Orleans Food Culture which represents cuisine from around the world.
  • Actively participating with the implementation of the annual Multicultural Student Orientation, the annual Fall Leadership Retreat, our November Fall Harvest Fest, the International Food and Music Fest each spring, and more.

OMA Graduate Assistant Job Description

Position Title: Graduate Assistantship

Reports to: Assistant Director of Multicultural Affairs

Position Summary:

The Graduate Assistant for the Office of Multicultural Affairs works with the staff to support the retention and graduation of undergraduate and graduate students of color at Tulane throughout the academic year. This position complements the existing technical, theoretical, and practical skills of the current staff to offer support to students. In addition, the position assists in the coordination of the Center for Intercultural Life campus-wide cultural, diversity, and social justice programs and services for all students seeking to learn about difference. It includes a 10-month appointment. The graduate assistant will work 20 hours per week including some evenings and weekend commitments and receive 10 monthly stipends at $1,250 each to be paid August-May ($12,500)

Minimum Qualifications & Remuneration:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited College or University in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Africana Studies, Latin American Studies, Urban Affairs, Public Administration or Public Policy, Asian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies or a similar program.
  • Enrolled for graduate courses at Tulane University 
  • From August 1 to May 31, graduate assistant will be considered essential personnel and required to help carry out the university’s emergency and hurricane preparedness plans.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated previous student leadership experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal and departmental development, professionalism, multi-cultural education, creativity, collaboration, and initiative
  • Experience presenting and facilitating with small to large groups

Key Responsibilities and Performance Standards:

General Administration  85%

Assist the staff of the Office of Multicultural Affairs in the coordination of educational, academic, and social programs and events centered on race, gender, and sexual identity. Assist in the coordination and supervision of the Program Coordinator and Ambassador programs. Ensure that information is disseminated in a timely manner.

Specific Responsibilities:

Office of Multicultural Affairs

  • Design programming
  • Coordinate programming for regularly hosted drop in luncheon for students, and two graduate student receptions
  • Assist the Assistant Director with the advising student organizations as it relates to leadership development and program planning support
  • Collect information and publishes regular communication via social media platforms and the organization management system WaveSync
  • Provide assessment support for the Office of Multicultural Affairs
  • Plan and implement annual achievement ceremonies
  • Assist with all programming (i.e. Intercultural Orientation, Leadership Retreat, Harvest Festival, Guest Speakers, Recruitment Events, Equity Diversity & Inclusion Workshops, Study Groups, Study Breaks, etc.)
  • Support social distancing logistically through staffing the office space through extended hours, and provide additional supervision of spaces to monitor capacity
  • Support student staff development and supervise late night programming hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs (no later than 11:00 p.m.)
  • Attend departmental in-services

General Divisional Responsibilities  10 %

Assists with the coordination of educational, academic, and social programs and events for diverse and underrepresented student communities

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Support new initiatives and develop innovative co-curricular programs emphasizing collaborative work with other academic and student affairs departments
  • Advocate for student concerns, requests, and issues
  • Explain university policy, rationale, and priorities to students and student staff
  • Participate in staff development opportunities and maintain involvement in national or regional organizations

Performance Standards:

  • Attend all required meetings
  • Represent the university in a professional manner
  • Complete assigned projects in the time allotted
  • Return all phone calls/emails/messages within 24 hours
  • Follow through with all supervisory responsibilities
  • Serve on departmental committees as needed

Other duties as assigned: 5%

Violence Prevention & Response Programming and Assessment
Graduate Assistant Job Description

Position Title: Graduate Assistantship

Position Summary:

The Graduate Assistant for Programming and Assessment works with the Director for the Office of Multicultural Affairs to support the retention and graduation of undergraduate and graduate students of color at Tulane as it relates to issues of sexual violence and prevention on campus. This position works to co-create, implement, and assess (quantitatively and qualitatively) various sexual prevention and response programs with the aim of reducing and ultimately eradicating sexual violence on Tulane’s campus. It includes a 10-month appointment. The graduate assistant will work 20 hours per week including some evenings and weekend commitments and receive compensation on an hourly basis from August 1- May 31

Minimum Qualifications & Remuneration:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited College or University in Social Work, Public Health, Sociology, Gender and Women Studies, Cultural Studies (Africana/Latin American/Asian/Middle Eastern, etc.) or similar program
  • Enrolled for graduate courses at Tulane University
  • Approximately 20 hours per week including some evenings and weekend commitments
  • From August 1 to May 31, graduate assistant will be considered essential personnel and required to help carry out the university’s emergency and hurricane preparedness plans.
  • Proficient use of survey and statistical analysis software (SPSS, Qualtrics, etc.)

  • Co-create and implement programs to support students of color develop an understanding of healthy relationships and recognize relationship concerns such as sexual violence, harassment, stalking, etc.
  • Assess the experiences of various populations of students on campus through qualitative and quantitative methods, including the support of the climate survey sent to ensure students of color are represented in the survey design and analysis
  • Assist in the implementation of specific programs such as My Sister’s Keeper, An annual luncheon for students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and prepare to coordinate and launch a similar initiative focused on supporting men of color on as it relates to sexual violence on campus.
  • Prepare reports for monthly sexual violence prevention and response working group meetings
  • Host engagement and healing-centered spaces that connect individuals who have experienced sexual misconduct (including both survivors and perpetrators) to resources for support
