Stop Racism and Other Forms of Oppression

In our current society we are dealing with multiple forms of oppression at various levels. The Carolyn Barber Pierre Center for Intercultural Life works to disrupt and dismantle oppression based on race, gender, class, ability, religion, age, and other identities. We are constantly responding to attacks against various communities we serve through the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Office for Gender and Sexual Diversity and we will continue to do so until we have achieved equity for all.

Here you will find a collection of our responses to various forms of oppression that impact the academic, cultural, and social climate in our communities. We remain in solidarity with those who face oppression wherever they may be. We work to remind everyone we serve that you belong here and we designed our space for you to feel connected, empowered, affirmed and safe.

Stop Anti-Asian Racism & Violence

The racist and xenophobic violence and attacks towards Asian communities are unacceptable and will not be tolerated. These recent events are happening in the midst of anti-Asian racism and oppression, which have disproportionately affected individuals who identify as Asian women. We condemn and actively fight against racism, xenophobia and oppression in all forms. Read More

Stop Anti-Black Racism & Violence

As we watched in horror the violent murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Modesto Reyes and George Floyd we recognized that these are not isolated incidents. These are a part of a broader system of racial injustice and anti-Blackness affecting Black people and communities of color within the land that is now called the “United States.” This has also been realized in the disproportionate burden Black and Brown communities are experiencing during the COVID-19 epidemic (e.g., serving as frontline and essential workers while also comprising the highest numbers of deaths). These racial inequities shape life chances and outcomes for Black and Brown people.

The Carolyn Barber Pierre Center for Intercultural Life and Center for Academic Equity in Newcomb-Tulane College want to express love for our students and continue to be in solidarity with our incoming and current students, faculty, staff, and alumni affected by this tragedy.  Read More
